Whenever I am feeling down in the dumps, nothing restores my spirits like a hot bowl of congee.Congee, called jook by some, is the traditional rice porridge of the Chinese people. You start with rice, water, and ginger, but then you can add almost anything you like -- chicken and black mushrooms, seafood, green vegetables, or even frog (called "field chicken" by Chinese people).
A big bowl of congee sticks to my ribs and warms me right down to my toes. Then the ginger kicks in, and I sit while my mood soars!
Congee Village on Allen Street serves a particularly good congee -- smolderingly hot, thick (but not too thick) and positively loaded with ginger. Chop-stick!
