I'm normally a strict meat eater at lunch, but when my friend Goose tipped me off to the stuffed eggplant at the Biankee deli on Water Street, I thought I'd give it a go.It certainly looked good — outside of Chinese markets, I had rarely seen a more attractive looking eggplant — but I had a few questions before plunking down $5.75. Namely: how much eggplant would I get; what would come on the side; and would they throw in a piece of garlic bread? The answers, my friends, were all in my favor. Two large pieces; baked ziti; and yes, yes, yes!
The eggplant was delicious. Firm, yet yielding, fried to a golden brown, stuffed with fresh, creamy mozzarella, and topped with bits of vine-ripe tomatoes. Magnifico!
